Detailed Sowing Instructions

1.Timing:Indoor or Direct Outdoor Sowing.
  • Indoors: Start 6–8 weeks before the last expected spring frost in deep seed trays or peat pots (to protect delicate taproots).

  • Direct Sowing: Sow outdoors in early spring after the last frost or in late summer for blooms the following season.

2.Soil Prep & Sowing Depth:1/4 inch deep.

Select a location with well-draining soil mixed with compost. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and lightly cover with fine soil or vermiculite, as seeds need light moisture to germinate.

3.Germination:10 to 14 days.

Keep soil consistently moist (not soggy) at temperatures between 18°C–21°C (65°F–70°F). Sprouting typically occurs within 10–14 days.

4.Transplanting & Spacing:18 to 24 inches apart.

Once seedlings have at least 2–3 sets of true leaves (and frost risk has passed), transplant outdoors or thin seedlings to 18–24 inches apart to allow proper air circulation around mature plants.

Plant Care & Maintenance Guide

  • Watering: Water deeply at the base of the plant once or twice a week. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal growth.

  • Support & Staking: Because plants grow up to 8 feet tall, stake individual stalks early in exposed or windy areas to keep spires upright.

  • Rust & Pest Control: Space plants well and water at soil level to prevent Hollyhock Rust (orange spots on leaves). Pick off infected lower leaves if spotted.

  • Pruning & Self-Seeding: Deadhead spent flowers to prolong the blooming season. Leave late-season stalks intact if you want the plants to self-seed naturally for next year!
